Benefice of Easington with Liverton

Baptisms (Christenings)

Your child is precious to you and precious to God. You want the very best for them, and so does God. You want them to make right choices in life, for themselves and for others. For many parents an important way to give their child the best start in life is by bringing them for a Christening service. Click here to see the text of the service

A Christening is much more than just a naming ceremony. It’s the start of an amazing journey of faith for your child and a special day for all your friends and family.

During a christening your child will be baptised with water and you will promise to raise your child in the Christian faith. In this service you will thank God for his gift of life and godparents promise help and support. The church also promises to welcome the child and to pray for the family.

Over the years to come, you will share your child’s faith journey together with them by:

  • Being there for your child to talk to about the bigger questions of life – questions about hope, faith and love.
  • Praying for your child through the ups and downs of their faith journey.
  • Showing them practically how to make those good choices in life.
  • Helping them to learn more about their Christian faith, through their church and in other ways.

So it’s a commitment to start as you mean to go on. It’s a commitment that isn’t for everyone and, some parents, whilst they wish to thank God for the gift of their child don’t feel ready to make such a big commitment at this stage. Other parents prefer to leave baptism until their child is old enough to make the choice for themselves. So the church offers an alternative to a baptism which is called a Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child Service, click here for more details of this service.

Where and when do Christening (Baptism) services take place?

We offer Christenings at All Saints, Easington and St Michael's, Liverton. Usually the service takes place after our morning services.

However we can hold a service at other times and on other days and you are, of course, welcome to have your child baptised during one of our Sunday morning services.

Baptism isn’t just for children!

Many people are not baptised as children and come to faith later in life. We are always happy to discuss adult baptism with you and will help you to prepare for the service.
