A Very British Pilgrimage - Land's End to John o Groats

Twenty months ago I had something of an Epiphany whilst walking the Camino de Santiago.  In the words of the song “I would walk 500 miles”, which is precisely what I did.

Since then my life has changed, and I have realised that my joy of walking and exercise could not only be a personal pilgrimage, but could be a vehicle towards helping the lives of others less fortunate than me.

I walked the Camino in honour of my friend and long time walking partner, Bob, who had recently died from Alzheimer’s Disease.  With his widow I set out on what was intended to be a fundraiser but it turned out to be so much more than that.

This year it had been my intention to walk the Camino Portuguese and to raise funds for a small African village that my wife and I sponsor.  Alas, Covid put paid to my plans but I still managed a walk of 310 miles from my home to Holy Island and back to raise funds.

I would like to go on pilgrimage again in 2021 and every year for as long as my aching bones will let me.  Rather than wait to see how things are with Covid I have decided to do a UK pilgrimage again but this time a little more ambitious.

I am planning to walk from Lands’ End to John‘o’Groats via recognised National footpaths, The West Coast Peninsular Walk, MacMillan Way, Offah’s Dyke, Pennine Way, West Highland Way and Scottish National Footpath over a period of, hopefully, 61 consecutive days.  The distance totals 1215 miles.

For me it is a personal journey but I would dearly like to raise funds for charity as I go.  This year particularly has highlighted the plight of many homeless people and children suffering poverty and abuse and the two charities I am hoping to support are Shelter and the Children’s Society.

You will find details of the route and a blog to let you know how things are going on the pages attached to this link.

I am due to start on 7th April 2021 (Covid permitting) and will be updating the site from time to time between now and then and then hopefully daily once the walk is under way.
